Practices and Results of Mirror Magic
by Gregor A. Gregorius, 1957

In 1925, a young engineer and painter known personally to the author was particularly immersed in the study of mirror magic. He was a highly intelligent man, rational in thought, and free from illusions. He was actively involved in the "Fraternitas Saturni" lodge in Berlin, where he was specially trained in a magical circle and educated in all magical disciplines. His specialty was astral magic, and he continually strived to make close contact with the demons of this sphere through intense concentration of will, aiming to master them. The path of mirror magic seemed particularly suitable to him.

His related experiments spanned several months, as he carefully calculated and utilized the appropriate cosmic constellations as a basis for his experiments. His personal accounts were as follows:

"I always conducted my experiments on the nights from Monday to Tuesday, preferring astrological aspect connections of the transit moon to Saturn in my natal chart, especially when these two celestial bodies were also in square aspect in the night sky. I began the invocations of the Saturnian demons during the Saturn hour in the Akash-Tattwa. A particular intensification of my energetic forces occurred preferably in the Tejas-Tattwa and during the Mars hour. In the incense fire, I burned plant incense associated with Saturn, Mars, and the Moon.

I sat in the so-called Egyptian posture in front of my black-draped table, on which I had placed the magic mirror. Besides three beeswax candles, only a dark red electric bulb was burning in the otherwise carefully darkened room. All pictures in the room had been covered or removed. At the beginning of the experiment, I burned a parchment strip in the incense fire, on which I had written the word 'Arratron' with my blood – taken from my middle finger – using a fine brush. I then entered into the breathing rhythm and stared continuously into the mirror. After a short time, its surface began to cloud, and the burning candles, as well as the entire room, seemed to blur into a mystical darkness. Without question, I was already in a light trance at this point, but without having lost my thinking and my feelings.

Suddenly, a long face formed in the mirror, emerging from a fog, with piercing black eyes looking at me. The contours of this face became sharper. Black, red, and yellow colored lights appeared in the mirror, illuminating or playing around the face.

Thanks to my magical training, I did not lose consciousness at all, nor did I feel any inner fear; rather, the desire immediately arose in me to capture this demonic face in a drawing or painting.

Mirror Magic

After a few minutes, the image in the mirror disappeared. I tried for a short time to make it reappear, but in vain. Then I ended the experiment. My entire limbs felt numb, I shivered and felt somewhat exhausted. I immediately checked the prevailing constellations and the time, and then repeated the experiment the following week.

Since I deliberately did not pronounce the usual dismissal formula, I hoped for the same success in the second experiment.

The second experiment was also successful. Once again, the face appeared in the mirror. I tried to speak a summoning spell, but my tongue was paralyzed, and I could only murmur repeatedly: "Appear - appear - appear!" However, my desire and will were even stronger than during the first experiment and remained unweakened.

In the days before, I had made a colored drawing to capture the apparition from memory. The face appeared again in the mirror with the same clarity, but this time the expression in the eyes was even more threatening. During the third experiment, conducted at the same time the following week, something strange happened. The image in the mirror appeared only fleetingly in pale contours, quickly disappearing. But between the mirror and the table, and me in my chair, something indefinable began to form, like a kind of mist. I felt an icy coldness around me and a very strong physical weakness that persisted long after the experiment.

Again, I deliberately did not speak the dismissal formula, but was even inwardly pleased and convinced that an astral schema had formed in front of me, which apparently tried to draw off my Odic forces to manifest itself. I repeated the experiment over and over again. The being I had summoned became more and more visible, not in the mirror, but forming in front of me. However, I had to realize that my subsequent states of exhaustion became increasingly severe, so I had to consider stopping these experiments. Moreover, I achieved no benefits and was not able to increase my own activity. Often, in the following weeks, I had the feeling of not being alone in the room, even when I was not experimenting. When I read a book, I often had the sensation that a being was standing behind me, looking over my shoulder.

But again and again, it gave me inner joy to sit in front of my easel by candlelight at night and continually add to, deepen, and beautify the demonic face I had painted. I even felt a kind of affection for this being. Of course, I was aware that I was heading towards a state of possession that was dangerous. When I started to suffer more and more from a kind of inexplicable nightmare, when one night a dark figure tried to choke me so that I woke up in terror with great difficulty breathing, I radically stopped these experiments.

I reported these experiences to the master of our lodge, and he, along with some of the older brothers, helpfully performed an exorcism in my room. This was successful, and the astral harassments ceased."

Epilogue.

The original painting created by the artist was burned in the ritual of exorcism. However, it was copied beforehand and published in the magazine "Saturn-Gnosis."

What is strange is that the painter disappeared without a trace from Berlin in 1930 and, despite his ties to the lodge, has never been seen again to this day. His further fate thus remains shrouded in mystery.
