Der OTOA-Reader

A comprehensive collection on the history and texts of the O.T.O.A. (mostly in German) brings together historical accounts, ritual materials, and correspondence: from M. P. Bertiaux’s “Crowley and the Haitian Gods” and M. C. Lamparter’s “History of the OTOA” to Bertiaux’s “Monastery of the Seven Rays” and his “Annotations to the Local History, 1977.” It also documents the activities of the Gnostic Light Movement in (former) Yugoslavia alongside the correspondence between Koenig and Bertiaux. Organizational and theological aspects are explored in texts such as Bertiaux’s “The Administration of the OTOA,” “A Gnostic Computer,” “About the Gnostic Bishops,” and “Zombie Makers.” Further materials include the Memphis-Misraim system of degrees and hierarchy, Lamparter’s account of the O.T.O.A.’s sex-magical system, studies of Ophidian Sexmagick, the Temple of Methodology, and the “Mass of Shiva.” Additional pieces comprise W. How to make your own McOTO

In the early 1990s, I corresponded with Leonardo S., a self-styled “bodyguard” to Grady Louis McMurtry who, to his credit, supplied me with a trove of singular documents. In an almost offhand remark, he observed that it would be a “sensation” to see the O.T.O. rituals in Crowley’s own hand — rather like Christians beholding the Bible in God’s handwriting — a comment that jogged the memory that I had, in fact, deposited precisely such items in a box somewhere. The upshot was predictable: all O.T.O. rituals by Crowley, reproduced as facsimiles in his handwriting, together with the Reuss rituals and some Golden Dawn/A∴A∴ rituals — a multilingual edition. Books from A.R.W. are printed by MARO, best known for their 1970s Charles Bukowski editions.

When I began my research into the so-called O.T.O. Phenomenon in 1985, the publications of A.R.W. — founded in 1965 — were always the most inspiring to me — not just for their content, but also for their overall look and feel. Everything had a certain improvised charm: modest, makeshift, occasionally veering into the downright shoddy. The books themselves — uneven in size, poorly glued like cheap paperbacks — would often disintegrate with use. A statement about the substance, perhaps? Some have claimed that A.R.W.’s output — a sprawling archive of facsimiles and original writings — helped spark the occult revival in the German-speaking world. That I would later find myself publishing with A.R.W. too seemed, in its own odd way, entirely on brand.

Satan — Jünger, Jäger und Justiz by Andreas Huettl and Peter-R. Koenig. Until then, it had not quite dawned on me that my entire freight of esoteric bric-à-brac could also be smuggled in as comedy. Since then, I have been unable to resist the temptation. The readers reacted accordingly — some with delight, others as if a filing cabinet had laughed at them. (out of print)

Aleister Crowley: un mago a Cefalù — “Origine dei gruppi O.T.O. e la Magia Sessuale” (in Italian). Other contributors: PierLuigi Zoccatelli, Marco Pasi, Raoul Loveday and others. The book involved a journey to Cefalù; the contact was most amusing, and I undoubtedly misbehaved.

Feldzug gegen Rudolf Steiner — Rudolf Steiner was never a member of any O.T.O. — Featuring undercover agent P.R. Koenig. Other contributors: Josef Dvorak, Eve Grothe, Wolfgang Weirauch, Stefan Leber and others. What interested me, yet again, was chiefly the surrounding context: the sort of people for whom all this held such fascination. A mildly erroneous date beneath one of the documents still gnaws away at me.

O.T.O. Rituals and Sex Magick — (English) — Birth and development of the O.T.O., Amazing Maze, structure and practices of O.T.O. groups, a note on the Constitutions, the rituals and instructions. Although probably no one ever believed me, Crowley himself was not what interested me. When I was asked to contribute to this book, what amused me was rather the context: the many anecdotes, most of which never found their way into my publications. (out of print)

Halo of Flies — in Richard Metzger’s “Book Of Lies”. Other contributors: Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Phil Hine, William S. Burroughs, Erik Davis, Nevill Drury, Anton LaVey, Timothy Leary, Robert Anton Wilson, Vere Chappell, Stephen Flowers and many more. Richard and I traded some delicious anecdotes about mutual “acquaintances”…
I had always harboured the modest ambition of appearing in a book alongside William S. Burroughs. And then — voilà.

Ultraculture One, edited by Jason Louv (CA, 2007). Includes an abridged version of “David Bowie and the Occult. The Laughing Gnostic”. Other contributors: Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Brion Gysin, Ira Cohen, Jhonn Balance and others. When I was asked, all that remained for me to do was say yes.

Contribution to Akron’s Crowley Tarot Führer (2007), with illustrations by Frieda Harris, Hansruedi Giger and others.
Since my mildly pubescent youth, I have owned a hand-altered original lithograph by H.R. Giger — signed, of course — and even interviewed him once for a school project, long before Alien turned him into an international name. At the time he was still something closer to an eccentric Swiss local phenomenon. I believe the topics were Death — and, for some reason, Gustav Meyrink. Years later, I spoke with him again in the course of my research.
Akron — Charles Frey, at one time in the orbit of Amon Düül — I met in Zürich, when he staged something faintly Baphometic at one of those theological seminars where I, too, delivered my small sermonette. He and I also shared another, rather less ecclesiastical enthusiasm: Hans Eppendorfer’s Der Ledermann spricht mit Hubert Fichte, first published by Suhrkamp in Frankfurt am Main in 1977, belonged to the small canon of books we both cherished. So when Akron invited me to contribute to one of his own books, in which his friend Giger also loomed rather prominently, it felt — oddly enough — like coming full circle.
